Jennifer Linds didn’t want to see a longtime business disappear, so she decided to become the owner.
Linds recently took over LYN’S DRAPERIES at 4058 Hammer Drive. The company does custom sewing work on drapes as well as a variety of other window treatments, including blinds and designer rods. The company also makes custom household items, such as pillows and bedding.
Lynette Beatty started the business in 1981 in a studio in her basement, eventually moving into the current space in 2011. A year later, Linds noticed the business while leasing space at Baker Creek Ceramic Studio, which was next door to Lyn’s Draperies. With a background in fashion design and a love of textiles, Linds said she couldn’t resist the urge to introduce herself to Beatty. Linds began working at Lyn’s Draperies a few hours a week, eventually taking on a full-time position.
Beatty began thinking about retirement and wondering whether to close the business. Such a skilled trade is hard to replace, so Beatty didn’t think she could find someone to take over the business. Fortunately, Linds was pondering the idea of doing so. The change in ownership took place at the beginning of the year.
It’s been a gradual transition, with Beatty staying on part time. Beatty said it didn’t take long for regular customers to become comfortable working with Linds. Along with employee Meryluz Duque, the three have focused on custom projects for people looking for something unique.
Linds said she’s updating the showroom and is working to bring in new fabric lines. The business will continue to work with both homeowners and designers, she said.
As she moves toward retirement, Beatty reflected on changes in the industry, from the fashion designs of the 1980s and ’90s to the use of computers for design purposes. Other aspects of the business haven’t changed, such as making sure the customer is on board through the whole process, and ensuring a custom design isn’t used more than once.
“When I started sewing, it was a cottage industry,” Beatty said, adding that it grew and then shifted overseas, so she is pleased the business she started will continue. “Bellingham really appreciates keeping things local.”
